California Attorney General Jerry Brown (pictured) is set to announce his run for governor today, a bid that contributes to a political oddity in our household. The 71-year-old Democrat first served as governor of California -- my native state -- from 1975 to 1983. He is eligible to run again because the state's current two-term limitation was not in effect when he first occupied the Capitol. If Brown's case sounds familiar, it's because a Republican candidate for Iowa governor, Terry Branstad, held this state's chief executive position from 1983 to 1999, when my Dubuque County native wife Jill was younger. These two campaigns create a definite feeling of déjà vu in our house -- a sense that the more things change, the more they really do stay the same.
